Periodontology (gum treatment)

A periodontist specializes in the diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the gums and the tissue surrounding the teeth, conducts examinations to identify issues such as gingivitis and periodontitis, and develops individualized treatment plans by using modern methods and technologies to restore the gum health and prevent the teeth loss.

They also educate patients about the importance of regular hygiene and preventive measures. The work of a periodontist contributes not only to improving the condition of the oral cavity but also to the patient’s overall health.

When treatment is needed (symptoms)?

One of the most common services provided to adult patients today is the treatment of aphthous stomatitis. Previously, this disease affected mainly children, but it is increasingly being diagnosed in adults.

Stomatitis is an inflammation of the oral mucosal epithelium. Small, painful ulcers appear on the gums, tongue, and inner surfaces of the cheeks. If the inflammation is not treated in time, it may lead to:

  • the development of hidden foci of infection in the mouth;
  • chronic forms of stomatitis in adults, which are more difficult to manage;
  • aphthous forms of the disease with deep lesions of the tongue and oral mucosa.

Periodontitis is a serious inflammatory disease. Our teeth are supported by the periodontium — a layer of connective tissue that supplies nutrients to the bone and jaw and helps keep the teeth firmly anchored in the gums. For various reasons, this connective tissue can become inflamed. The disease manifests as bleeding gums, pain while chewing, and discomfort even at rest. Without timely treatment, periodontitis — an infectious condition that rarely resolves without complications — can develop. Possible complications include:

  • persistent bad breath;
  • accumulation of pus in periodontal pockets, leading to severe inflammation;
  • bone tissue atrophy.

If periodontal inflammation is not treated promptly, it can ultimately result in tooth loss.

Gingivitis is an inflammatory gum disease and is considered the most common: both young people (under 25) and older adults frequently suffer from it. Treatment of gingivitis in adults is often required due to inadequate oral hygiene. In an unfavorable, “unclean” environment, bacteria reproduce three times faster, leading to gum inflammation around the tooth that requires urgent treatment. Potential consequences of untreated gingivitis include:

  • bleeding gums;
  • pain when chewing;
  • periodontitis.

Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory process affecting the tissue around a dental implant, causing progressive loss of supporting bone. This infection damages both the soft tissues and the bone surrounding the implant, leading to bone resorption. Peri-implantitis is one of the most common causes of implant failure. Comprehensive treatment of peri-implantitis is carried out in several stages:

Stage 1: Removal of dental plaque and elimination of inflammation.
Stage 2: Cleaning of the implant surface and bone grafting. In some cases, removal of the implant is necessary.

Why treatment is necessary?

The periodontist plays an important role in maintaining the health of the gums and teeth.

They help prevent gum diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss.

If diseases have already developed, the periodontist offers effective treatment methods to restore the gum health.

Additionally, they educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, which contribute to the long-term preservation of the tooth health.

The work of the periodontist is essential not only for oral health but also for the patient’s overall health.

Stages of periodontal disease

Normal

Gums should be light pink in color, with an even texture, and free from redness, swelling, or bleeding during tooth brushing. Teeth should be stable and immobile, without any signs of looseness.

Gingivitis

This is the first stage when inflammation of the gums is observed. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and mild bleeding during brushing. At this stage, the disease is reversible with timely prevention and treatment.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to a moderate stage of periodontitis. The gums begin to recede from the teeth, forming pockets between the teeth and gums, which promotes bacterial accumulation and eventual tissue destruction.

Severe stage

At this stage, the tissues supporting the teeth begin to break down, leading to tooth mobility. Symptoms include severe inflammation, pain, and significant deterioration of the overall gum condition.

Advanced stage:

If periodontitis is left untreated, it can lead to significant destruction of bone tissue and gums, resulting in tooth loss. Teeth may become loose and eventually fall out.

How Periodontal treatment is done in our clinic?

01

Diagnostics

The dentist conducts a visual examination of the gums, assesses the condition of the teeth, and may order an X-ray to identify potential issues such as inflammation or infections.

02

Cleaning and Removal of Plaque

Professional hygienic cleaning is performed to remove tartar and plaque, which helps reduce inflammation and improve the condition of the gums.

03

Treatment of Gum Diseases

Depending on the level of the disease, medication may be offered, including antibacterial agents or special gels to eliminate infection.

04

Curettage

In cases of severe inflammation, curettage may be required — a procedure that cleans the gum pockets of infected tissue and plaque to restore the gum health.

05

Preventive Measures

The dentist provides recommendations for gum care, including proper oral hygiene and the use of specialized products such as antiseptic mouth rinses.

06

Regular Check-ups

After treatment, it is important to have regular dental visits to monitor the condition of the gums and determine the need for additional procedures or adjustments to the care plan.

Kristīne Zvejniece

The best clinic in Riga! I recommend doing a Dental Check-Up (full dental diagnostics) once a year — you’ll see 3D images of your teeth and be able to identify potential issues early, so toothache doesn’t catch you off guard while travelling or at an important moment. I was given a treatment plan that allows me to plan my finances and fix my teeth on time. The staff patiently answered all my questions and offered personalised advice on how to improve my smile in a gentle and natural way. Truly recommended from the heart!

Baiba Svjatska

They did a fantastic job treating my three-year-old’s cavities — without anaesthesia! A wonderful attitude towards both children and parents. My child went to the dentist with real joy.

Laura Kalveniece

The new clinic premises are spacious, bright, and have a pleasant modern atmosphere. I’m glad that hygienist Inga and dentist Līga continue their work here — I’ve always experienced excellent service and never had any problems.

Davis Cipans

Oļegs Vavilovs

An excellent clinic with a wonderful paediatric dentist! My five-year-old child happily goes for treatment and is never afraid. The doctor managed to make him curious rather than scared. The injection is given so gently that the child doesn’t even notice it. It was very important for me to avoid general anaesthesia, and we succeeded. Highly recommended!

Hanna Vauchkova

A very pleasant atmosphere and impeccable service — from the reception desk to the dental chair and back again. I would like to compliment administrator Jekaterina for her exceptionally polite and caring approach. I truly recommend Sky Dream Clinic to everyone.

Linda Ansone

I visited this clinic for a dental diagnostic appointment with Dr Marija (if I remember correctly), who is from Ukraine. She photographed my teeth, performed a 3D scan, and explained everything in detail about each tooth. Her knowledge and attitude were excellent — I’m very satisfied! She’s still learning Latvian, but already speaks it quite well. Thank you!

Bikerman Intruder

Very kind and attentive service. My tooth started hurting, and they found time for me that very same day! The doctor was highly knowledgeable and explained everything clearly and thoroughly.

F.A.Q.

The main causes of gum diseases include inadequate oral hygiene, the buildup of plaque, smoking, hormonal changes, and certain systemic diseases such as diabetes.

The treatment involves diagnosing the condition of the gums, professional cleaning, possible curettage, and surgical intervention in more complex cases. The dentist develops an individualized treatment plan based on the patient’s condition.

The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the disease and can range from several visits for preventive care to several weeks or months for more serious interventions.

In most cases, treatment is performed under anesthesia, and patients experience minimal discomfort. Some mild soreness may occur after treatment, but it usually resolves quickly.

Regular dental visits, maintaining proper oral hygiene, including brushing twice a day and using dental floss, as well as a healthy diet, will help prevent gum diseases.
